BLOG - How to bridge the gap between research and policy impact

Good government policy needs good evidence. However, good quality evidence can be expensive and time-consuming to produce. By using the wealth of public sector data which has been securely linked and made available in Scotland and the wider UK, research has the potential to transform evidence-based policymaking.

The Royal Statistical Society (RSS) conference is taking place in Edinburgh from 1 to 4 September 2025.

We invite you to join both ADR UK and ADR Scotland at their complementary workshops at the RSS Conference on 3 and 4 September, highlighting how to bridge the gap between research and policy impact.

Day 1 - Wednesday 3 Sept

Don’t miss this interactive session with ADR UK Research Fellows, where they will present their findings and how their research has made an impact on public policy.

They will also share tips on working with administrative data and how academics can work with government to ensure that their research is seen by decision makers.

Using administrative data for the public good: how evidence-based insights can lead to more effective and targeted policies, with case studies from researchers working with ASHE (Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings) and MoJ (Ministry of Justice) data

Day 2 - Thursday 4 Sept

Bridging the evidence gap: how to use the wealth of public service data to transform policymaking

In this workshop, find out about the value of administrative data and data linkage from the ADR Scotland team. Hear examples of using linked administrative data, including a policy evaluation from the Scottish Government of the Family Nurse Partnership.

Professor Iain Atherton will also present details of the ADR UK research project designed to better understand the nursing and midwifery workforce that will inform policy and planning.
